The devastating Nepal–Tibet disaster of August 26, 2026 has left behind not only destruction and loss of life, but also a profound spiritual question.

Many of those travelling through the region were pilgrims and devotees.

Naturally, some people may ask:

“If they were travelling to worship God, why didn’t God protect them?”

This question deserves more than a comforting religious answer.

It requires us to understand two things clearly:

What actually happened physically?

And:

What do we really mean when we say “God protects us”?

The Nepal disaster may be forcing us to examine whether our understanding of God itself needs to evolve.

What Actually Happened in the Nepal–Tibet Disaster?

On August 26, 2026, a massive section of the mountain and glacier system near Langtang Lirung in Nepal collapsed.

Satellite reconstruction indicates that a huge mass of rock and glacier—roughly 600 metres across—fell from an elevation of around 5,200 metres and dropped approximately 1,200 metres into the valley below.

Scientists now believe that the underlying bedrock itself failed, carrying glacier ice with it.

The enormous mass of:

rock + ice + snow + debris

entered the Lhende valley and interfered with the river.

Water accumulated temporarily.

The blockage then released.

A massive surge of:

water + mud + rock + ice + debris

raced downstream through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.

So this was not simply:

“Heavy rain caused a flood.”

It was a cascading mountain disaster:

But we should remain scientifically disciplined.

It has not yet been established that human-caused climate change directly caused this particular mountain to collapse on August 26.

So we should distinguish carefully:

The Himalayan cryosphere is rapidly changing.

This distinction matters because higher consciousness should make us more accurate, not more eager to force evidence into our beliefs.

Then Comes the Spiritual Question: Why Didn’t God Stop the Mountain?

When religious people die during pilgrimage, many instinctively think:

“They were going to God. Why didn’t God save them?”

But hidden inside that question is an assumption.

We assume Divine protection means:

Danger appears → God intervenes → physical law stops → devotee survives.

Gravity stops.

The mountain does not collapse.

The flood disappears.

The devotee is miraculously protected.

But what if our understanding of Divine protection is incomplete?

Earth operates through physical laws.

Gravity does not ask:

“Is this person a devotee?”

A glacier does not know:

“This person is travelling to Kailash.”

Rock does not suspend itself because someone is spiritually sincere.

Spirituality does not automatically provide physical exemption from Earth’s laws.

So the relationship may be better understood as:

Human Role

Notice → Understand → Investigate → Decide → Act → Learn → Evolve

The purpose of the Coach is not to keep the player permanently dependent.

The purpose is to eventually create a capable player.

Divine Guidance Does Not Have to Be a Supernatural Voice

Many people imagine Divine guidance as:

“God must literally speak to me.”

But guidance may reach human beings through many channels:

• intuition;

• scientific research;

• satellite data;

• sensors;

• another person’s observation;

• local knowledge;

• previous disasters;

• temperature abnormalities;

• an engineer’s warning;

• an unusual environmental pattern;

• or simply a strong inner feeling:

“Something here is not normal. Look deeper.”

Calling these channels “Divine guidance” is a spiritual interpretation, not a scientific claim.

But scientifically, something very important is true:

Information can exist before human beings understand its significance.

On July 8, 2025, a supraglacial lake in Tibet released water into the Lhende–Bhote Koshi system.

• damaged the Rasuwagadhi dry port;

• connecting separate pieces of evidence;

• listening to intuition without becoming blindly controlled by it;

• verifying through science;

• taking responsibility;

• acting under uncertainty;

• and valuing life above convenience.

Higher consciousness therefore has a very practical expression.

It changes behaviour.

Why Inner Wisdom Matters

Data does not make decisions.

Human beings make decisions.

Often there will never be 100% certainty.

A decision-maker may face:

moderate probability of catastrophe

versus

temporary inconvenience caused by evacuation.

Higher wisdom asks:

“What happens if I am wrong?”

If the evacuation is unnecessary:

people may lose a day or two.

If non-evacuation is wrong:

people may lose their lives.

Higher consciousness therefore includes the ability to practise:

Have We Misunderstood God?

This disaster brings me to a deeper realisation.

Perhaps we have misunderstood God and therefore developed the wrong expectations from God.

Very often our faith says:

“I worship You.

I go to the temple.

I go on pilgrimage.

Therefore You must protect me.”

But God’s role may be much greater.

One of the central roles of the Divine is to elevate human wisdom, values and consciousness.

Through life, we are continuously being pushed to:

• see reality;

• think deeply;

• distinguish truth from distortion;

• develop values;

• reduce ego;

• become more present;

• sharpen intuition;

• use intelligence;

• accept responsibility;

• learn;

• and become wiser.

Wisdom + Values + Higher Consciousness

may be far closer to the centre of spiritual evolution than blind dependence.

Ritual Without Wisdom Is Incomplete Spirituality

Puja can be beautiful.

Temples can be sacred.

Fasting can build discipline.

Devotional songs can open the heart.

Pilgrimage can transform a person.

But if all these practices continue while:

wisdom does not grow,

awareness does not grow,

values do not grow,

responsibility does not grow,

and our ability to understand reality does not grow,

then something essential is still missing.

The purpose of ritual should not simply be to keep repeating ritual.

Ritual should eventually transform consciousness.

“God Will Save Me” Is an Incomplete Faith

A more mature faith would be:

“God is continuously developing the wisdom through which I learn to live and protect life responsibly.”

Humanity has been given:

• intelligence;

• observation;

• reasoning;

• intuition;

• memory;

• science;

• technology;

• cooperation;

• and the capacity to learn from experience.

If we do not develop and use these capacities, and later ask:

“God, why didn’t You save us?”

perhaps we need to reconsider what we were expecting God to do.

God Does Not Carry the Child Forever

A parent does not carry a child forever so that the child never needs to learn to walk.

The child eventually learns.

The child falls.

Learns balance.

Learns danger.

Learns judgement.

Becomes capable.

This is why the God-as-Coach understanding becomes so important.

A coach does not say:

“You never need to improve. I will play for you forever.”

The coach says:

“Learn to see.”

“Learn to think.”

“Learn to decide.”

“Develop your skill.”

“Become stronger.”

“Become wiser.”

But many times, what we ask the Coach is:

“Come onto the field.

Play on my behalf.

Make me win.”

Perhaps that is the wrong expectation.

The Divine lesson may instead be:

You must grow.

Your wisdom must grow.

Your values must rise.

Your consciousness must expand.

You must use the intelligence given to you.

Divine Surrender Does Not Mean Passivity

Divine Surrender is not:

“I will do nothing. God will take care of everything.”

Mature surrender is:

“My knowledge is limited.

I will quiet my fear and ego.

I will observe carefully.

I will listen.

I will question.

I will investigate.

I will use every intelligence available to me.

I will fulfil my responsibility completely.

And only what is genuinely beyond my control, I will surrender to the Divine.”

Therefore:

Surrender should increase responsibility, not reduce it.

Blind Ritualism Cannot Be the Final Stage

Blind ritualism cannot protect humanity.

Evolving wisdom can.

Blind belief cannot protect humanity.

Awareness can.

Fear-based devotion cannot protect humanity.

Conscious responsibility can.

Rituals may connect the mind to the Divine.

But that connection must ultimately mature into:

Wisdom.

Values.

Awareness.

Responsibility.

Higher Consciousness.

We Must Continuously Ask: “Have I Truly Understood God?”

Regardless of religion,

regardless of which form of God we worship,

regardless of which rituals we follow,

one spiritual responsibility remains:

We must keep deepening our understanding of the Divine.

Our understanding of God should not remain frozen at the level we inherited as children.

If consciousness evolves, our understanding must also evolve.

Perhaps we first know God as:

Protector.

Then:

Provider.

Then:

Judge.

Then:

Guide.

Then:

Coach.

And eventually:

Higher Intelligence with whom conscious human beings learn to participate responsibly.

God may not have changed.

Our capacity to understand God may have changed.

What Is God Developing in Humanity?

The Divine is not merely there to:

fulfil desires,

remove every discomfort,

keep us dependent,

or prevent every difficult event.

The Divine develops:

Wisdom.

Values.

Consciousness.

Responsibility.

Discernment.

Courage.

Compassion.

Human capability.

And eventually, perhaps, the ability to participate in creation more intelligently.

Reaction → Prediction → Prevention → Co-Creation

Humanity itself seems to move through stages.

Early stage:

Disaster → Rescue

Higher stage:

Disaster → Investigation → Learning

Higher:

Risk → Detection → Warning

Higher:

Risk → Prediction

Higher:

Risk → Prevention

And eventually:

Reaction → Prediction → Prevention → Co-Creation

The highest intelligence is not becoming endlessly better at rescuing people after disaster.

It is becoming capable enough that fewer people need rescuing.

We May Not Be Able to Prevent the Hazard — But We Can Prevent the Catastrophe

This may be the deepest lesson of the Nepal disaster.

Human beings may not always be able to prevent:

THE HAZARD.

A glacier may collapse.

A mountain may fall.

A river may flood.

But humanity can increasingly learn to prevent:

THE HAZARD FROM BECOMING A MASS HUMAN CATASTROPHE.

Blatten showed this clearly.

The mountain collapsed.

The village was largely destroyed.

But hundreds of people were already elsewhere.

That is evolved protection.

So Why Didn’t God Save the Pilgrims?

Perhaps this question itself has to evolve.

Instead of asking only:

“Why didn’t God stop the mountain?”

we could ask:

What had nature already shown us?

What did the July 2025 flood teach us?

What scientific knowledge existed?

What signals were available?

What monitoring was missing?

What institutional gaps remained?

What could scientists learn?

What could governments improve?

What can humanity build now?

How can we become more present, intuitive, scientific and responsible?

Those questions lead somewhere.

They lead toward evolution.

Divine Protection May Be Very Different From What We Imagined

Old understanding:

Divine Protection = God prevents something bad from happening to me.

Expanded understanding:

Divine Protection may also operate through awareness, wisdom, intuition, science, knowledge, preparation, people, warnings and right action.

A scientist can become an instrument of protection.

A satellite can become an instrument of protection.

A sensor can become an instrument of protection.

A villager noticing unusual movement can become an instrument of protection.

An evacuation order can become an instrument of protection.

Science does not need to stand outside spirituality.

Within this spiritual framework:

Science may be one of the ways consciousness learns to read creation.

The Complete Formula

Earth gives us reality.

Science helps us read reality.

Present awareness helps us notice change.

Intuition tells us where to look more deeply.

Science verifies what intuition notices.

Wisdom evaluates consequences.

Values help us choose responsibly.

Human courage converts understanding into action.

Action creates protection.

Surrender accepts what genuinely remains beyond control.

Learning improves the next response.

Co-Creation builds a better future.

Final Reflection: Perhaps We Need to Ask a Better Question

Maybe the highest spiritual question after the Nepal–Tibet tragedy is not:

“God, why didn’t You save them?”

Maybe it is:

“God, what must humanity become capable of seeing, understanding and doing so that the next warning can become protection before catastrophe arrives?”

Perhaps God’s highest protection is not repeatedly rescuing humanity from reality.

Perhaps it is helping humanity evolve enough to:

understand reality,

recognise its signals,

develop wisdom,

strengthen values,

respond intelligently,

protect one another,

take responsibility for what lies within human capacity,

and eventually become responsible participants in creation itself.

It is not enough merely to worship God.

We must understand what God is trying to develop us into.

When that understanding changes,

our spirituality changes.

Our decisions change.

Our science changes.

Our systems change.

Our responsibility changes.

And eventually, humanity itself changes.

That is where:

Divine Surrender becomes Divine Co-Creation.
